He lost himself in religious dogma, six years of Baptist education, a feeble effort at marriage, and two suicide attempts. It was a desperate struggle to fit in. It is a story of the extremes to which we often go to not disappoint other people. He knows all too well what it's like to be uncomfortable in one's own skin, to seek after other people's ideas of truth instead of his own.

Several weeks ago I was in the corner Dollar Store. I absolutely love that place because I never know what I’ll come across. On this particular day, my treasure happened to be canned vegetables. They were on sale; 3 for $1.00. Being the consummate bargain shopper that I am, I was all over that deal! I selected several cans, placed them on the counter, and waited to be checked out. The woman in front of me (who had to be in her late 50s or early 60s) glanced over to assess my obvious find. She then pointed out that several of the cans were dented and bent. She responded by saying, “Some of your canned goods are beaten up. You might want to exchange them.” I looked at her, thought for a moment, and then responded with all sincerity, “We’re all damaged and imperfect in some way so I’m ok with them just as they are. After all, the contents inside are still the sam e.” She looked at me in deep thought and then said, “You know w hat, you’re absolutely right.”
In a brief encounter with a total stranger, I finally realized an insight that has taken me years to grasp. In a world where we long for everything new, bright, and shiny, I had come to be ok with, embraced, and even appreciated the dents, dings, and ‘damage” that life inevitably brought my way. The amazing thing is that with these apparent dings also came valuable and beautiful life lessons. Numerous profound and deep spiritual truths have been discovered. One of which is that we are perfectly flawed for we are humanity and divinity intertwined. Real peace comes in the complete acceptance of both. These lessons, in my opinion, are what true, authentic, and unabashed living is about. A most appropriate quote about my new-found acceptance comes from Stephen Levine’s book, Healing into Life and Death. This quote epitomizes real healing. It reads, “Truly we have been waiting our whole life to hear “I love you” in our own voice.”
Mark D. Hyde is a native of Sumter, SC. He graduated from North Greenville College in Tigerville, SC, with an Associates of Arts Degree in 1988 and Gardner-Webb College in Boiling Springs, NC, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religion in 1990. He attended the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary from 1990 until 1992 where he pursued a Master of Divinity Degree in Pastoral Ministries. He was a chaplain and held various church positions throughout his college and seminary years.
Mark has over 13 years experience as a recruiter in both the medical and engineering fields. Mark currently resides in Miami and is available for book clubs and speaking engagements.
